  1. Undergraduate Pre-Law education

According to the decision of the Illinois Board of Admissions, the applicants to the Bar must earn a pre-law degree with at least 90 semester hours from a university or a college that is approved by the Board. Your university or college can be approved by the American Bar Association and by the Board if it is accredited by a regional or national accreditation body listed in the U.S. Department of Education database. Although it is not obligatory to earn a degree at this stage, it is highly preferred if you hold a Bachelor’s degree.
  2. LSAT exam
    Following the decision of the Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar, you need to graduate from an ABA-accredited law school, for which you must pass the LSAT exam – the Law School Admission Test. Be sure to apply for this test online and pay the $190 fee for the exam.
  3. Studying in a Law School in Illinois
    Once you get a passing score on the LSAT exam, you are admitted to a Law School. The ABA-accredited law school can be anywhere in the United States, not just in Illinois. Here you have to earn your J.D. (Juris Doctor) degree to be able to apply for the State Bar Exam.
  4. Apply to sit for the Illinois State Bar Exam
    You can take this exam only two times in the year – in February and July.
  5. If you have passed the State Bar Exam with a high score, we have good news for you: you are admitted to the Illinois Bar! Now you are a part of it and you can be considered a licensed attorney in Illinois!
